Over half a million enroll in Obamacare in one week

The federal government released figures showing that 543,098 people signed up for Obamacare health insurance plans during the first week of the 2016 open enrollment period that began November 1, 2015.

Federal versus state

That number represents only those who used the federal marketplace that covers 38 states. The remaining 12 states and the District of Columbia operate their own health insurance marketplaces. The numbers of enrollees for those markets were not released.

At the federal site two-thirds of the enrollees were return customers while one-third were first-time purchasers.

Why some have yet to enroll

Sylvia Burwell, the Secretary of U. S. Health and Human Services, says that those who have yet to enroll are often held back by fear that an insurance plan will be too expensive. They don’t fully understand that they are probably eligible for subsidies that will reduce their out-of-pocket expenses. In fact, 80% of those who do enroll in Obamacare are eligible for financial assistance. By the end of the 2016 it’s expected that roughly 10 million will enroll in affordable healthcare.

The current enrollment period for Obamacare coverage in 2016 runs through January 31.
